Meet some of our team!

What job do you do now and what does it involve?

I now work for the AHSS Project (Assertive Housing Support Service) – assisting Service Users in Temporary Accommodation with day to day living needs.

Is that the only job you’ve had with Cyrenians, if not, what did you do before?

I started as a Volunteer around 4 or 5 years ago. When the pandemic hit I secured a 6 month contract as a Support Practitioner on AC2U – the emergency COVID response initiative. Then for the final two months of 2020 I worked on Care Choices, providing Care at Home to the vulnerable and elderly.

What is a typical day like in your role?

I like to start the day with a list – because is there anything that gives a man more purpose than a list? We have Service Users allocated to us (we are their nominated Care Practitioner), and it is working out the best communication method and timing for them not you!

What’s the best part of your job?

I would likely say the unpredictability and the rewards. You phone your Service User just for a regular check only to find something has gone seriously wrong and you’re straight into Crisis Management mode. And when you get that thanks it lifts your soul.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying for a job with Aberdeen Cyrenians?

For me it wasn’t about the money. I was Project Manager predominantly in Oil and Gas, but it just felt like I was working a stressful job only to help increase some Blue Chip’s bottom line. This is the polar opposite, this is reality. Take it as read – there are no greater rewards in life than helping those in need – therefore if the opportunity arises to work for Aberdeen Cyrenians I’d say grab it with both hands. And don’t let go.

What job do you do now and what does it involve?

I'm a support practitioner, and it involves supporting service users with mental health issues and service users coming from the criminal justice system.

Is that the only job you’ve had with Cyrenians, if not, what did you do before?

Before I got the job as a support practitioner I was a cleaner with the Aberdeen Cyrenians.

What is a typical day like in your role?

A typical day would be visiting service users at home, supporting them to go shopping and make meals. Also supporting them with any financial help they need like applying for benefits. I support service users with keeping up with their housekeeping and day to day running of the household too.

What’s the best part of your job?

Getting to meet new people and being able to support them and know at the end of the day you've done something positive and helped someone.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about applying for a job with Aberdeen Cyrenians?

The advice I'd give would be if you're going to apply for a job with Aberdeen Cyrenians would be, just be yourself, be proactive and have the willingness to learn every day, and don't ever be too hard on yourself.
